CORVO-001 Concept Definition
CORVO-001 was chartered: a weighted, modular shift knob establishing the product language for everything CORVO makes after it.
The shift knob was chosen as the first CORVO product because it is the densest point of contact between driver and machine — touched on every drive, hundreds of times, mostly without looking.
The charter set the principles that still govern the program: hand feel before visual novelty, authentic materials, no decorative machining without tactile purpose, and an attachment system that is reliable, serviceable, and deliberately boring.
From the first sketch, modularity was a requirement rather than a feature. The knob body must outlive any single vehicle application, with vehicle-specific thread interfaces carried by a replaceable insert.
Technical Notes
- Form direction: soft teardrop crown, continuous shoulder-to-neck transition, integrated base.
- Development platform: Mazda MX-5 Miata, with multi-platform support as a design requirement.
Decisions Made
- CORVO-001 is not a Miata-only product. Vehicle threads live in a replaceable insert.
- Surface strategy: smooth matte exterior, no knurling, no finger grooves.
