Materials
One geometry, three metals, three temperaments.
Aluminum, titanium, and brass each express the locked Rev A form differently — in mass, in color, in how they age. Aluminum is in development now; titanium and brass follow prototype validation.
016061-T6In Development
6061 Aluminum
The flagship material and the first to become a physical part. Aluminum defines the reference CORVO-001: light enough to feel precise, dense enough to feel machined.
- Visual Character
- Even, low-sheen gray out of the machine. The planned Type III hard anodize takes it near-black with a fine mineral texture rather than a coating gloss.
- Tactile Character
- Expected to read cool on first touch and settle quickly toward hand temperature. Bead-blasted 6061 has a dry, fine-grained feel that resists fingerprints.
- Relative Weight
- The baseline. The assembly calculates to ~217 g, with the steel adapter contributing low-mounted ballast the aluminum body alone could not provide.
- Engineering
- 6061-T6 machines predictably and holds the thin-wall geometry around the insert bore well. Its low density is exactly why the mass target was revised to 205–220 g — honest numbers for an honest material.
- Finish
- Fine glass bead blast on all prototypes. Type III hard anodize (black) planned after ergonomic validation; first functional prototypes deliberately remain unfinished.
- Status
- In development. The first Rev A physical prototype has been ordered in this material.
02Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5Under Evaluation
Titanium
The premium variant. Titanium sits between aluminum and brass in density and carries its own quiet, gray-warm presence that neither tries to imitate.
- Visual Character
- Natural titanium gray with a faint warmth under direct light. Bead blasting gives it a uniform satin surface that shifts subtly with viewing angle.
- Tactile Character
- Expected to feel noticeably denser than aluminum in the same envelope, with a similar dry, fine surface texture. Subject to prototype validation.
- Relative Weight
- Roughly 40% heavier than the aluminum assembly. The current cavity study calculates to ~312 g with the internal access channel tightened to Ø8 mm.
- Engineering
- Grade 5 titanium is demanding to machine, which affects cavity strategy: the internal relief geometry costs balance percentage, so the access channel was tightened to keep the variant inside the 40–48% balance band.
- Finish
- Fine glass bead blast, left as natural titanium. No coating planned.
- Status
- Under evaluation. Internal cavity geometry is still being tuned; no titanium prototype has been ordered yet.
03C360Planned Material
Brass
The heritage variant. Brass is the material of instrument knobs and pre-war switchgear — dense, warm, and honest about its age.
- Visual Character
- Warm gold when fresh, drifting toward a deeper, quieter tone as it oxidizes. A fine satin directional finish is intended, with natural aging accepted rather than sealed away.
- Tactile Character
- Expected to be the heaviest and most present variant in hand. How its surface wears under daily contact is one of the things a prototype must answer.
- Relative Weight
- Targeted at roughly 440–480 g — about twice the aluminum assembly. Substantial internal cavity tuning is required to keep balance inside the approved band.
- Engineering
- C360 machines beautifully, but its density inverts the aluminum problem: instead of adding ballast, the design must remove material. Earlier analysis suggests on the order of 16.5 cm³ of internal relief, subject to final CAD calculation.
- Finish
- Fine satin directional finish. No clear coat unless testing proves it necessary; patina is part of the material's character.
- Status
- Planned material. Cavity tuning has not been finalized and no brass prototype has been ordered.
