Balance Band Validation
The below-midplane mass band was set at 40–48%. The Rev A aluminum assembly calculates to 42.6%, with the center of gravity 0.2 mm above the geometric midplane.
A shift knob's balance changes how the shift feels more than its total mass does. CORVO-001 targets a neutral-to-low balance: enough mass carried low to keep the knob planted, without making the crown feel hollow.
With the steel insert seated low in the body, the aluminum assembly places 42.6% of its mass below the Z 32.0 mm midplane and its center of gravity at Z 32.2 mm — effectively on the midplane, biased ever so slightly high by the crown volume.
Technical Notes
- Approved balance band: 40–48% of assembly mass below the midplane.
- Rev A aluminum result: 42.6% below midplane, CoG at Z 32.2 mm.
- Titanium cavity study: tightening the access channel to Ø8 mm brings the titanium variant to ~40.4% at ~312 g — inside the band.
Decisions Made
- The earlier 55–60% below-midplane ambition was formally replaced — it is not achievable inside the approved envelope without compromising the exterior.
Open Questions
- Whether calculated balance matches perceived balance can only be answered by physical prototypes.
Next Validation Step
Revise the adapter bore to protect the neck wall.
